Chiropractic Q & A

How do chiropractic adjustments work?

Chiropractic adjustments work by releasing tension and restoring structures within the musculoskeletal system back to their natural positions. When an injury occurs, inflammation can cause both muscles and bone to shift out of place. This can cause the affected area to move and react differently. Abnormal movements can result in even more inflammation and the formation of scar tissue. When scar tissue forms, the result can be pain and stiffness that prevents joints or affected areas from moving as they should. Chiropractic adjustments reduce the inflammation, helping the body to regain its natural form and function. While multiple adjustments may be needed, each builds on the results of the prior treatment and strengthens the body as a whole.

Why is massage therapy included with a chiropractic adjustment?

Chiropractic care affects the skeleton and soft tissues. By shifting the soft tissues of the body, along with the connective tissues and bone, it provides both strength and stability to the area. Massage therapy is used along with chiropractic adjustments to strengthen and tone the muscles, so they're better able to support the bones. Massage floods injured areas with both oxygen and nutrients the muscles need to remain strong and flexible. When muscles are massaged after a chiropractic adjustment, the body can begin the healing process, allowing the adjusted structures to remain in their natural positions for longer periods of time.

What are the long-term effects of chronic pain?

When a person experiences chronic pain for a long time, it can have a devastating impact on their quality of life. If their mobility decreases, they may begin to feel as if they no longer have a purpose or are no longer useful. Depression is also a common reaction. If the cause of the chronic pain is known, it’s important to take measures to manage it effectively. With chiropractic adjustments, deep tissue massage, and physical therapy, many patients can take control of their life, regaining much of what was lost when they were immobile. Dr. Coogan, a Kirkland chiropractor, offers a hands-on healing approach with a multitude of benefits that go far beyond the use of medications. It gives the body an opportunity to heal itself, providing a faster, more effective healing process.
